Kvitky. The Big Book of Traditional Ukrainian House Paintings

2500,00 ₴

This book presents the largest printed collection to date of materials on traditional Ukrainian house paintings from the first third of the 20th century. For the first time under one cover, it brings together copies of sketches and photographs of “flowered” houses from the historical Dnieper region of Ukraine, Slobozhanshchyna, Zaporizhzhia, the Black Sea region, and Podillia.

Fantastical flowers, whimsical scrolls, and delicate hop tendrils were created by women painters with no formal art education, but with deep knowledge of local artistic practices and a keen sense of harmony and taste. This art, in turn, was studied by people with a great passion for exploring Ukrainian culture. That is why the book keeps both those who created the paintings and those who researched them in focus. Excerpts from publications on house painting created a century ago are interwoven here with a visual narrative, placing this art in its historical context.

The edition is bilingual and includes English translations of key texts.
