Volynian sopilka + short training course

1900,00

The folk sopilka is crafted in the traditional way. It is an authentic and ancient wind instrument found not only in Ukraine but also across the world under various names. It has a bright sound, and at times a rustling tone reminiscent of the wind. Suitable for beginners. Perfect for playing by the riverside, at home, in the mountains, or on a walk with a child — anywhere you can sound freely.

In addition to the sopilka, or dudka as it is called in Volyn, you receive a small training course (in Ukrainian) from Dmytro Bereziuk, a master of folk instruments from Volyn and Polissia, consisting of three short videos. In them, you will learn the basic information about this folk instrument, see how a sopilka is made step by step, and study two traditional melodies. Along with the sopilka, we gift a printed handkerchief with hand-made block printing inspired by vesnianky.

Characteristics:

Diatonic sopilka in the D major key, 6 playing holes.

Length: 30 cm.

Material: elderwood.

How to care for the sopilka:

Avoid fluctuations in humidity and mechanical damage (especially to the fipple, as it is the most delicate part of the sopilka). Do not leave the instrument in the sun. If a hissing sound appears, you may pour oil in so that it flows out through the fipple. You can also blow through the fipple to prevent condensation from accumulating, as it will damage the wood.

Who made it:

The sopilka was made by the folk musical instrument master Dmytro Bereziuk.

The handkerchief was designed by pelekhata project and made by block printing craftswomen Hannusia Miziuk, Sofia Melnyk.
